You’ve probably seen on the news by now that Microsoft have released Windows 10. For those who aren’t sure Windows is the main brain (Operating System) of most computers on the planet.
Why would I want Windows 10?
Windows 10 is the latest and greatest version of Windows. Its built for modern computing and more friendly, robust and secure than previous versions. For all the details of Windows 10 please visit the Windows 10 Site which has all the details but a few of the best ones include.
- Much better Start Menu
No more full screen tiles that really are meant for a tablet.
- Action Center
Like notifications on your mobile phone. Quickly tells you about new email and gives you access to buttons to set brightness and volume etc.
Personal Assistant like Siri on iPhone and Google Now on Android. If you have a compatible microphone you can just ask cortana a question and she will help you out.
How much does Windows 10 cost?
Microsoft have done something nobody thought they would and have offered Windows 10 for free so long as you have Windows 7 or higher. You have to claim your free copy before July 29th 2016 but after you have, you own it for the life of your computer.
Should I upgrade?
Microsoft boldly states that Windows 10 should run everything Windows 7 and Windows 8 does and in our experience thats mostly true. That being said, If you use your computer for business work or use special programs that may be old then you should wait.
If you’re a normal user that mostly uses a web browser like Internet Explorer, Chrome or Firefox then its definitely worth upgrading. Your computer will be slightly faster and more secure than previous versions of windows.
If you use Windows 8 then Windows 10 will certainly be easier to use and if you use Windows 7 you’ll feel right at home.
Can I do the upgrade myself?
Absolutely. Every computer that’s eligible for the free upgrade should pop up a message offering you the upgrade over the next month or two. The standard advice applies when upgrading any computer like this though. Back up your data! Things can and do go wrong so never trust the upgrade to keep everything safe.
Can you do the upgrade for me?
Of course. If you’re not technically inclined we can backup* your data, perform the upgradeand make sure all drivers and updates are installed. We will also inspect the computer before hand and point out any problems that may arise before installing. We do all this for just £49.99.
* While the safety of your data is our highest priority, your data is your own responsibility. If you do nothing else on computers you must learn how to back up your data and make sure you are safe.
Great news for anyone needing a faster internet connection. BT have announced that fibre will be coming to the Rhuddlan exchange in December 2014. This will mean speeds of 30-40Mbps will be possible and much faster upload speeds.
Fibre broadband is going to make your experience on the internet a lot smoother. Especially if you watch movies, play games or have a large family of internet users if your house. Faster uploading means that if you want to put your pictures or movies onto Facebook or Google+ quickly.

This is a question we are getting asked more and more. It’s the current buzzword in the world of TV’s and electronics. Last year it was 3D. Next year it will probably be UltraHD. For now, Any TV retailer will be telling you about the Smart features of their TV’s.
What is it?
Well, simply put. A Smart TV does everything a normal TV does but will also let you view media from other places. A basic Smart TV will usually allow you to plug in an SD memory card from your digital camera so you can view all of your pictures and videos on the big screen. More advanced smart TV’s will connect to the internet and let you watch video like BBC iPlayer or Youtube. Even more advanced smart TV’s will let you play games or run apps like Facebook or Angry Birds. Its like having a computer inside your TV. For a lot of people this can be very useful.
Can I turn my normal TV into a Smart TV?
If your TV is relatively new and has a HDMI connection then yes. You can buy plenty of ‘add-on’ boxes that will give you these features. A lot of new DVD and Blu-ray Players have ‘smart’ features built-in. This is actually a better way of doing it because, like computers, the hardware inside a smart TV will go out of date very quickly compared to the traditional TV features. A lot of the functions of Smart TV’s only continue to work if they are maintained and updated regularly by the maker. This is because the ‘Apps’ need to be modified to cope with changes to services like Facebook and Twitter. The Internet is a constantly evolving thing and Smart TV’s need to mirror that.
By using a separate box, you could upgrade the smart features without having to buy a complete new TV.
Do I need Smart?
This is a question only you can answer. If you use services like Facebook, Youtube and Twitter often then this can be a very good way to view content. It’s also really great to sit a view family photos on the big screen. Smart TV’s are in their infancy but they are here to stay and will only get better over time.
With all the new ways of watching TV today we thought it would be a good idea to give you some basic information about the UK’s TV Licensing laws.
Now, the fairness of a TV license in the first place is a discussion for another day. What we wanted to do here was to give you the information on whether you actually need one and the costs etc.
All the information in this post has been taken from tvlicensing.co.uk. We urge you to pay a visit to this site and have a look if you are at all unsure about your situation and what your legal requirements are.
According to the site, you need to be covered by a valid TV Licence if you watch or record TV as it’s being broadcast. This includes the use of devices such as a computer, laptop, mobile phone or DVD/video recorder. The current costs are £145.50 for colour and £49.00 for a black and white TV Licence.
There are certain exceptions to this but there are also situations where you might think you are covered but you aren’t. It’s important to note that a TV license covers one residence only. If you have multiple homes or properties, you may need more licenses. The following lists break down most people’s situations.
You need a TV Licence
- You watch or record live TV on any electrical device.
- You are a standard UK home owner.
- You are a Tenant in a house or flat.
- You are a student living in student accommodation.
- You are a business with a TV for staff or customers.
You don’t need a TV License
- You watch TV programmes online AFTER they have been broadcast. For example, iPlayer, Youtube, NetFlix etc.
- You sell TV’s (Including demonstrating and setting up).
- You are 75 or over (you must apply for 3 year exemption).
You are entitled to a discount
- You are a student and don’t live at your accommodation over the summer.
Please understand these are the general rules. If your situation isn’t clear-cut you should check tvlicensing.co.uk for more information.
